Glen Hansard Dead at 56: Oscar-Winning Irish Musician Dies

Glen Hansard, Oscar-Winning Irish Musician and Actor, Dies at 56 in Dublin Crash

The music world is mourning the loss of a true troubadour. Glen Hansard, the celebrated Irish singer-songwriter who won an Academy Award for his work in the beloved independent film Once, has tragically died. He was 56 years old.

Hansard passed away following a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in the early hours of Wednesday morning, July 29, 2026, on the outskirts of Dublin.

Details of the Tragic Accident

According to authorities, the fatal crash occurred on Lower Road in Lucan, located in western Dublin, shortly before 4:30 a.m. local time. Emergency services were quickly dispatched, and Hansard was treated at the scene. Sadly, he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Irish police are currently seeking witnesses as they conduct an active investigation into the circumstances of the collision.

Hansard’s management company, ATC Management, released a statement expressing that his family is "deeply shocked and heartbroken by this tragic loss" and requested privacy during this incredibly difficult time.

From Dublin Streets to Oscar Glory

Born in Dublin in 1970, Hansard’s path to international acclaim was as authentic as his music. He began his career busking on the streets of his hometown—a life experience he would famously draw upon later.

His breakthrough in the public eye came when he was cast as Outspan Foster, the guitarist in the hit 1991 movie The Commitments. However, it was his enduring dedication to music that defined his legacy.

Hansard was the long-serving frontman of the revered Irish rock band The Frames, a group that became a cornerstone of the Irish music scene.

His global profile skyrocketed in 2007 with the release of the indie musical Once, in which he starred alongside Czech musician Markéta Irglová. The duo, performing under the name The Swell Season, captured hearts worldwide. The following year, they won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for their emotional ballad, "Falling Slowly".

Hansard also enjoyed a successful solo career, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album in 2016 for Didn't He Ramble.

Tributes Pour In for a "True Troubadour"

Beyond his musical talents, Hansard was widely known for his deep commitment to social issues, particularly his advocacy for the homeless. He famously organized an annual Christmas Eve charity busk outside Dublin's Gaiety Theatre, drawing major artists to raise funds for those in need.

Figures from across Ireland have expressed their sorrow over his passing:

·        Micheál Martin (Taoiseach): Described Hansard as “a talented musician and actor who made a significant contribution to Ireland's cultural landscape over many years".

·        Michael D. Higgins (Former President): Remembered him as “a troubadour whose gift for storytelling brought so much joy to audiences across the world".

Glen Hansard is survived by his wife, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, and their three-year-old son, Christy.

The 8GB Immortal: Is the RX 590 Still Worth It in 2026?

The AMD Radeon RX 590 is the "undead" champion of the Polaris era. Released in late 2018 as a 12nm "last hurrah" for the architecture, it was essentially a factory-overclocked RX 580 on steroids. Now that we are in 2026 , the RX 590 has transitioned from a mid-range workhorse to a legendary budget relic. If you’re still rocking one—or considering picking up a used "Fatboy" for a ultra-budget build—here is how it stands in the current landscape. Performance: The 1080p Reality Check In 2026, the RX 590 is no longer the 1440p contender it once claimed to be. However, its 8GB of VRAM has aged like fine wine, keeping it relevant while many of its 4GB and 6GB contemporaries (like the GTX 1060 or 1660) have fallen into obsolescence. How to Make Your eMMC Storage Phone Faster: 7 Proven Fixes

How to Make Your eMMC Storage Phone Fast To make an eMMC storage phone fast, you must reduce the number of read/write operations and free up space. The fastest fixes include keeping at least 20% of your internal storage empty, switching to "Lite" apps, clearing cached data, and moving large media files to an external SD card or cloud storage. Why Is eMMC Storage Slow? eMMC (embedded Multi-Media Controller) is an older, budget-friendly flash storage technology commonly found in entry-level and mid-range smartphones. Unlike the newer UFS (Universal Flash Storage) which can read and write data simultaneously, eMMC processes tasks one at a time (half-duplex). When your phone tries to update an app, download a file, and load a game at the same time, an eMMC drive creates a bottleneck, resulting in lag, stutters, and slow app launch times. According to flash storage benchmarks, an eMMC 5.1 drive has a maximum sequential read speed of roughly 250 MB/s, while even an older ...
