With the upcoming iOS 18 update, Apple is enhancing the functionality of its latest earbuds, the AirPods Pro 2. These new features, which require iOS 18, iPadOS 18, or macOS Sequoia, will also need a firmware update set to be released this fall. Here’s a look at the exciting new capabilities that are coming to the AirPods Pro 2.


1. HEAD GESTURES

One of the standout features is head gestures, which provide a hands-free way to interact with Siri or manage calls. By nodding your head, you can accept a call, and by shaking it, you can decline a call. These gestures also work for confirming or denying Siri requests, offering a convenient alternative to voice commands.

2. VOICE ISOLATION

Voice Isolation enhances call clarity by using machine learning to filter out ambient noise such as wind, traffic, and other background sounds. This feature ensures that your voice is prioritized, making it easier for the person on the other end to hear you clearly. This improvement will be available for both the original AirPods Pro and the AirPods Pro 2.

3. BETTER ADAPTIVE AUDIO CONTROLS

Adaptive Noise Control in iOS 18 has been improved to offer more granular control over the amount of ambient noise that is filtered out. This means you can adjust the level of noise cancellation to suit your environment, whether you need more focus or want to stay aware of your surroundings.

4. PERSONALIZED SPATIAL AUDIO FOR GAMING

Personalized Spatial Audio, which uses the TrueDepth camera on your iPhone to create a customized sound profile, is now extended to gaming. This aims to provide a more immersive audio experience for gamers. Game developers can integrate spatial audio into their games, enhancing the overall gaming experience. This feature will be available not only for the AirPods Pro but also for the AirPods Max and the third-generation AirPods.

5. IMPROVED VOICE QUALITY IN GAMES

The AirPods Pro 2 will benefit from enhanced voice quality for in-game chat and streaming. This includes dynamic head tracking and support for 16-bit 48kHz audio, ensuring clear and consistent communication during gameplay.

6. LOWER LATENCY

Apple promises the best wireless audio latency ever for mobile gaming with the AirPods Pro 2, thanks to iOS 18. This improvement means actions in the game will have minimal delay between execution and hearing the resulting sound, making for a more responsive and enjoyable gaming experience.
