The opening clash of the Super Eight stage between Pakistan and New Zealand in the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup ended in a disappointing washout at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo today.
Despite
the high stakes of the second round, persistent tropical rain forced officials
to abandon the game without a single ball being bowled.
A
Damp Start in Colombo
The evening began with a glimmer of hope as the toss took
place on schedule. Pakistan’s captain, Salman Ali Agha, won the toss and
elected to bat first, citing the slowing nature of the Colombo pitch.
Groundstaff
worked tirelessly to keep the entire playing area under covers, but the rain
intensity increased as the night progressed. After
multiple inspections and a final cut-off time of 10:15 PM local time, the umpires officially called
off the match.
Points Split and Group Standings
Under the
tournament's Super Eight regulations, there are no reserve days for this stage.
As a result:
·
Pakistan and New Zealand earn 1 point each.
·
Both
teams remain in a deadlock in Group 2, which also features England and hosts Sri
Lanka.
While a
point on the board is better than a loss, both camps will view this as a missed
opportunity to gain early momentum in a notoriously difficult group.
The Road Ahead
The tournament now shifts its focus to
Kandy and Ahmedabad for a packed Sunday
schedule.
