Why did Petrol Prices Change Suddenly?
The
volatility in the Pakistani fuel market is currently driven by the US-Israeli conflict with Iran,
which began in late February 2026.
Initially,
the government passed this burden on to the consumers on April 3, raising
petrol by Rs137.
New Subsidies and Relief Package
To
further cushion the impact of these high prices, the government has introduced
a targeted subsidy program:
·
Motorbike
Owners: A subsidy of Rs100 per liter (capped at specific monthly limits).
·
Public
Transport: Monthly subsidies of Rs100,000 for passenger
buses to keep fares stable.
·
Goods
Transport: Small trucks will receive Rs70,000 and large trucks Rs80,000 per month.
·
Railways: Fares for economy class will remain unchanged despite
the fuel hike.
Impact
on Inflation and the Common Man
Even with the Rs80 reduction, petrol remains
significantly higher than the Rs266-Rs321 range seen in early 2026. This
"new normal" is expected to keep the cost of living high in cities
like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. For students and freelancers, this makes
commuting and operational costs a primary concern.
