GTA 6 Physical Edition Has No Disc: The $80 "Code-in-Box" Controversy Explained
For over a decade, gamers have waited to hold
a physical copy of Grand Theft
Auto 6 in their hands.
Instead,
players who purchase the physical edition for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X
will find a digital download code inside an otherwise empty case.
The End of Physical Media?
Rockstar's decision to release a
"code-in-box" version is largely driven by logistics and security. GTA 6 is expected to feature a
massive file size that would likely require two 100GB discs to physically
print. By providing a code instead, Rockstar entirely eliminates the risk of
warehouse leaks and early physical copies breaking the street date.
However,
this means players will not truly "own" a physical copy of the game,
nullifying the ability to resell the disc or play without a mandatory internet
connection.
Launch Roadmap and Pre-Loads
To
compensate for the massive file size that players will now be forced to
download, Rockstar is shipping the physical boxes to retail a week early.
