WhatsApp Usernames Are Here: How to Reserve Yours & Boost Privacy
For
17 years, connecting on WhatsApp meant handing over your personal phone number
to acquaintances, distant coworkers, or large community group chats.
Meta
has announced that WhatsApp
usernames are officially rolling out.
Here is everything you need to know about the
new update, how to claim your name, and why this is a massive win for digital
privacy.
Why Usernames Change the Game
Until
now, joining a local neighborhood chat or connecting with someone you just met
at a networking event required giving out your digits.
The username update
solves this everyday discomfort. Once the feature is fully integrated, you will
be able to share your unique @handle instead of your phone
number. If you initiate a chat using your username, the
recipient will not be able to see your phone number unless they already have it
saved in their contacts.

How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username Right
Now
WhatsApp
is rolling out reservations gradually for both iOS and Android users.
1. Update your WhatsApp application to the latest version
via the App Store or Google Play Store.
2. Open
the app and navigate to Settings.
3. Tap
on Account.
4. Select
Username.
5. Type
in your desired handle. If it is available, confirm your selection to reserve
it.
Note: Usernames cannot start with "www."
The "Username Key" for Extra
Security
To
prevent spam and unwanted messages, WhatsApp is not creating a public,
searchable directory.
For
even tighter control, WhatsApp is introducing the Username Key.
Don't
wait until the full launch. Check your WhatsApp settings today and lock
in your username before someone else claims it.
